A \textit{fusion category} is a monoidal category with two-sided duals, enriched in the category of vector spaces over a given field, which is moreover semisimple with only finitely many isomorphism classes of simple objects, such that the vector space of endomorphisms of the monoidal unit is trivial (i.e. equal to the ground field). Generalizing solvable groups, \textit{solvability} of a fusion category is defined in [\textit{P. Etingof} et al., Adv. Math. 226, No. 1, 176--205 (2011; Zbl 1210.18009)]. The central question of the paper under review is whether solvability of a fusion category is determined by its \textit{fusion rules} (i.e. structure constants of its Grothendieck ring). An affirmative answer is given for a distinguished family of examples arising from representations of semisimple Hopf algebras associated to exact factorizations of the symmetric and alternating groups. For group-theoretical fusion categories the \(S\)-matrix of the Drinfeld center is shown to determine solvability.
