A Banach space $X$ is said to have the strong diameter two property if every convex combination of slices, i.e., every set of the form \[ \sum_{i=1}^n \lambda_i S_i, \] where $\lambda_1,\ldots, \lambda_n\in (0,1]$ with $\sum_{i=1}^n \lambda_i=1$ and each $S_i$ is a slice of the unit ball $B_X$, has diameter exactly two. A stronger version of this property was introduced in [\textit{T. A. Abrahamsen} et al., ``New applications of extremely regular function spaces'' (to appear; \url{arXiv:1711.01494})], the so-called symmetric strong diameter two property. A Banach space $X$ has the symmetric strong diameter two property (SSD2P in short) if, for every $n\in\mathbb N$, all slices $S_1,\dots, S_n$ of $B_X$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, there are $x_i\in S_i$ for every $i\in\{1,\ldots, n\}$ and there exists $\varphi\in B_X$ with $\Vert \varphi\Vert>1-\varepsilon$ such that $x_i\pm \varphi\in S_i$ for every $i\in\{1,\dots, n\}$. The paper under review makes a deep study of the SSD2P in Banach spaces. \par The contents of the paper is divided into five sections. After an introductory section, the second section of the paper is devoted to prove a general characterisation of the SSD2P in Banach spaces which is applied throughout the rest of the paper. The third section is devoted to analyse the stability of this property by taking absolute norms in Cartesian products of Banach spaces, from where it is derived that the SD2P and SSD2P are different properties. Section 4 deals with the problem of how the SSD2P is inherited by subspaces, obtaining analogous results (with quite close arguments) to those of the SD2P. Section 5 is devoted to study the weak-star version of the SSD2P, the so-called weak-star symmetric strong diameter two property ($w^*$-SSD2P), in spaces of Lipschitz functions, generalising some results of the literature. Finally, some open questions derived from the results of the paper are posed in the last section.
