The authors show that having a pole is a necessary condition for a Gromov hyperbolic uniform graph. It is also essential for a complete Riemannian manifold with bounded local geometry which satisfies Gromov's hyperbolic and positive Cheeger isoperimetric constant. The results are used to generalize the results in [the authors, Commun. Contemp. Math. 20, No. 5, Article ID 1750050, 33 p. (2018; Zbl 1398.53047)]. In the paper, a pole in a point at a geodesic metric space means that there exists \(m>0\) such that each point in the metric space lies in an \(m\)-neighborhood of some geodesic ray that emanates from the point.
