Local exterior square and Asai \(L\)-functions for \(\operatorname{GL}(n)\) in odd characteristic (Q6043862): Difference between revisions

Let \(F\) be a nonarchimedean local field of odd positive characteristic. This paper studies the exterior square, Bump-Friedberg, and Asai local \(L\)-functions of the group \(\text{GL}_n(F)\), generalizing earlier work of the author in characteristic zero [\textit{Y. Jo}, Math. Z. 294, No. 3--4, 1687--1725 (2020; Zbl 1460.11074)] to show that these \(L\)-functions agree with the corresponding Artin \(L\)-functions. Several, but not all, of the results were already known and the introduction reviews this earlier work. The core argument uses a strategy of \textit{J. W. Cogdell} and \textit{I. I. Piatetski-Shapiro} [Prog. Math. 323, 115--173 (2017; Zbl 1433.11054)] and I recommend that anyone closely following the paper under review first acquaint themselves with this earlier work. In positive characteristic the primary difficulty is to globalize supercuspidal representations in an appropriate way, and here the globalization is achieved via a method of \textit{G. Henniart} and \textit{L. Lomelí} [Am. J. Math. 133, No. 1, 187--196 (2011; Zbl 1219.11076); J. Number Theory 133, No. 12, 4024--4035 (2013; Zbl 1311.11041)]. The theory of distinguished representations also makes an appearance, through its connection to the exceptionality of poles of local \(L\)-functions. This paper will primarily be of interest to specialists, but a close reading of it will introduce the reader to many interesting ideas in the theory of local \(L\)-functions.
