For an integer \(n\geq 2\), let \(\mathbb{B}\) denote the open unit ball in \(\mathbb{C}^n\). A multivariable analogue of the classical Hardy space of the unit circle is the Drury-Arveson space \(H_{n}^{2}\) on \(\mathbb{B}\). Many results which hold for the classical Hardy space can be extended to \(H_{n}^{2}\), however, some new phenomena appear. For instance, the collection of multipliers of \(H_{n}^{2}\), i.e., holomorphic functions \(f\) on \(\mathbb{B}\) for which \(fH_{n}^{2}\subseteq H_{n}^{2}\), is strictly smaller than \(H^{\infty}\). If \(f\) is a multiplier, then the multiplication operator \(M_f(g)=fg\) is a bounded linear operator on \(H_{n}^{2}\). Let \(\zeta_1, \dots, \zeta_n\) be the coordinate functions on \(\mathbb{B}\). \textit{W.\,Arveson} [Acta Math.\ 181, No.\,2, 159--228 (1998; Zbl 0952.46035)] has proved that all commutators of the form \([M_{\zeta_j}^{*},M_{\zeta_i}]\) are in the Schatten class \(\mathcal{C}_p\) if \(p>n\). This result is improved in the following way. If \(n\geq 2\) and \(\infty>p>2n\), then there exists a constant \(C=C(n, p)>0\) such that \(\| [M_{f}^{*},M_{\zeta_i}]\|_{p} \leq C\| M_{f}\|\) for every multiplier \(f\) of \(H_{n}^{2}\) and every \(1\leq i\leq n\). Thus, for each multiplier \(f\), the commutators \([M_{f}^{*},M_{\zeta_i}]\) \((1\leq i\leq n)\) are in the Schatten class \(\mathcal{C}_{p}\) if \(p>2n\). This Schatten class result is used in a study of multipliers of \(H_{n}^{2}\). In particular, a few results related to the \(C^{*}\)-algebra \(\mathcal{TM}_n\) which is generated by all multiplication operators \(M_f\), where \(f\) is a multiplier of \(H_{n}^{2}\), are proved.
