The study of the Paley-Wiener theorem for distributions is motivated by the fact that the action of a compactly supported distribution can in general be characterized not directly but via the Fourier transforms of this distribution and of a test function. 76 references are given in the paper, where various versions of the Paley-Wiener theorem are studied. The main result obtained presents, for an arbitrary fixed compact set \(K\), necessary and sufficient conditions on the Taylor expansion coefficients of entire functions of exponential type so that these functions are the Fourier image of distributions supported in \(K\).
