The author studies the index of Leray which depends on two paths of Lagrangian planes with transversal endpoints. The authors show how all Lagrangian and symplectic intersection indices can be recovered from properties of Leray's index. He also gives a characterisation of Leray's index in terms of the signature \(\tau\) of a triple of Lagrangian planes. In the final section of the paper he shows that the intersection theory for symplectic paths can be developed in a similar way.
