    Let \(H(U)\) denote the holomorphic functions on the unit disc \(U\) and \(\varphi\) an element of \(U\) such that \(\varphi(U)\subseteq U\). Then \(C_\varphi\) defined by \(C_\varphi f=f\circ\varphi\) is a linear operator on \(H(U) \). Let \(\varphi^n\) denote the \(n\)-th iterative of \(\varphi\) and \((\varphi^n)' (\xi)\) the angular derivative of \(\varphi^n\) at a point \(\xi\in\partial U\), with the usual convention that this is taken to be \(\infty\) when the angular derivative fails to exist. The author defines the essential angular derivative of \(\varphi\) to be \(\alpha (\varphi)= \lim_{n\to \infty} (\inf\{| (\varphi^n)'(\xi) |: \xi\in \partial U\})^{1/n}\). It is shown for example that if \(\varphi\) has its Denjoy-Wolff point \(w\) in \(\partial U\) then \(\alpha (\varphi)= \varphi'(w)\), while \(|\alpha (\varphi) |>1\) if \(w\in U\). Always \(r_\varepsilon (C_\varphi) \geq (\alpha (\varphi))^{-1/2}\), where \(r_\varepsilon (C_\varphi)\) denotes the essential spectral radius of \(C_\varphi\) on the Hardy space \(H^2(U)\subset H(U)\). In the case when \(w\in U\) and \(\varphi' (w)\neq 0\) there is a unique Koenigs function \(\sigma\in H(U)\) such that \(\sigma \circ\varphi =\varphi'(w) \sigma\), \(\sigma'(w)=1\). Since \(\sigma\) and its powers are the only possible eigenfunctions of \(C_\varphi\) it is important to know when \(\sigma\) belongs to certain subspaces of \(H(U)\). Let \(p>0\) and let \(g(p)\) denote those \(f\in H(U)\) such that \(\lim_{| z|\to 1}(1-| z |)^{1/p} | f(z) |=0\). Assuming \(w=0\) it is shown that \(\sigma\in g(p)\) if and only if \(| \varphi'(0) |^p> {1\over \alpha (\varphi)}\).
