Let \(\alpha\) be a \({\mathbb Z}^r\)-action by automorphisms on a nilmanifold \(X\) and \(\mu\) an ergodic \(\alpha\)-invariant probability measure on \(X\). The author shows that \(\mu\) is the uniform measure on \(X\) unless, modulo finite index modification, one of the following obstructions occurs for an algebraic factor action: either the factor measure has zero entropy under every element of the action or the factor action is virtually cyclic. The author deduces a rigidity property for invariant closed subsets.
