The following question appears in the article [\textit{J. L. Kazdan}, Math. Ann. 261, 227--234 (1982; Zbl 0476.53022)]. If a noncompact Riemannian manifold \(M\) has complete metrics \(g_{+}\) and \(g_{-}\) with positive (respectively negative) scalar curvature, is there one with zero scalar curvature? In the main result of the paper under review, the author gives a partial affirmative answer to this question. Moreover, the behavior of the Yamabe flow in complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds is also investigated.
