Dikranjan and Shakmatov asked (in [\textit{E. Pearl} (ed.), Open problems in topology. II. Amsterdam: Elsevier (2007; Zbl 1158.54300)]) whether every infinite group that admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology can be endowed with a countably compact Hausdorff group topology that admits a nontrivial convergent sequence. The authors prove that the answer to this question is positive for abelian groups of cardinality continuum, assuming that the pseudo-intersection number \(\mathfrak{p}\) is equal to the continuum.
