The authors prove that a Cohen-Macaulay normal variety has Du Bois singularities if and only if the direct image of the canonical sheaf with the simple pole on the exceptional divisor of a log resolution coincides with the canonical sheaf of the variety. Based on this characterization, they obtain that a pair of Cohen-Macaulay variety and an effective \(\mathbb{Q}\)-Cartier divisor has Du Bois singularities, if the pair is log-canonical. The paper also treats non-normal case. They prove that weakly semi-log-canonical pair consisting of Cohen-Macaulay seminormal scheme and an effective \(\mathbb{Q}\)-Cartier divisor has Du Bois singularities.
