\textit{L. Schwartz} [Invent. Math. 134, No. 1, 211--227 (1998; Zbl 0919.55007)] proved that certain unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra could not arise as the mod \(2\) cohomology of a space, confirming a conjecture of Kuhn. A key step in Schwartz's proof was a repeated use of the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence. In this paper Kuhn shows how this step may be replaced by a single use of the spectral sequence associated to the Goodwillie tower for the functor \(\Sigma^{\infty} \Omega^{n}\). As a bonus he is able to prove a stronger version of Schwartz's result.
