With every inclusion of von Neumann algebras \(A\subset B\) one can associate a natural embedding \(\phi\) : \(L^{\infty}(A)\to L^ p(B)\). Then the split property of \(A\subset B\) (existence of an intermediate type I factor) is closely related to nuclearity and compactness properties of \(\phi\).
