This paper is devoted to studying generalized metrizability properties on paratopological groups and topological groups. It is proved that a first-countable paratopological group which is a \(\beta\)-space is developable; and the authors construct a Hausdorff, separable, non-metrizable paratopological group which is developable. They consider paratopological (topological) groups determined by a point-countable cover of first-countable subspaces and give partial answers to a conjecture by Arhangel'skii asserting that \(S_{\omega_1}\) cannot be embedded into a sequential topological group and a question posed by \textit{T. Nogura, D. B. Shakhmatov} and \textit{Y. Tanaka} [Topology Appl. 54, No. 1--3, 203--212 (1993; Zbl 0808.54026)]. They also provide a negative answer to a question by \textit{J. Cao, R. Drozdowski} and \textit{Z. Piotrowski} [Czech. Math. J. 60, No.~1, 133--148 (2010; Zbl 1224.54079)]. Finally remainders of topological and paratopological groups are discussed.
