    For a locally compact Hausdorff abelian group \(G\) and \(H\subseteq G\), a countable uniform lattice, \(M\) a closed subgroup of \(G\) satisfying \(H\subseteq M\subseteq G\), the authors study necessary and sufficient conditions in order that an \(H\)-invariant space \(S\subseteq L^2(G)\) is \(M\)-invariant. For a measurable section \(\Omega\) of \(\widehat G/H^\perp\) and \({\mathcal N}\) a countable section of \(H^\perp /M^\perp\), \(\sigma\in \mathcal N\), \(B_\sigma =\Omega+\sigma+M^*\) and \(U_\sigma=\{f\in L^2(G):\hat f=\gamma_{B_\sigma}\hat g\) with \(g\in S\}\), it is shown that \(S\) is \(M\)-invariant if and only if \(U_\sigma\subseteq S\) for all \(\sigma \in{\mathcal N}\).
