The Hecke algebra \(H(W)\) of a Weyl group \(W\) is known to have some remarkable realizations in characteristic \(p>0\) (cf. work of Iwahori and more recently Beilinson, Brylinski and Lusztig-Vogan; in the work of the latter authors \(H(W)\) appears to be a \(\mathbb{Z}[q,q^{-1}]\)-algebra isomorphic with the Grothendieck group of a suitable category of \(\mathbb{Q}_{\ell}\)-sheaves on \(X\times X\) -- where \(X\) is the flag variety of a reductive group over a finite field -- viewed as an algebra in some ``natural'' way). The paper under review uses M. Saito's theory of Hodge modules to give a realization of \(H(W)\) in characteristic zero (i.e. to prove that \(H(W)\) is a \(\mathbb{Z}[q,q^{-1}]\)-algebra isomorphic with the Grothendieck group of a certain category of Hodge modules on \(X\times X\) where \(X\) is the flag variety of a reductive group over \(\mathbb{C})\). A similar realization is given for \(H(W_a)\) \((W_a= \) affine Weyl group) in terms of equivariant \(K\)-theory.
