The authors consider a boundary value problem in a Hilbert space for a second-order elliptic differential operator equation that contains a spectral parameter \(\lambda\) in the equation as well as in the boundary conditions. A similar problem with a perturbed term but without the spectral parameter in the boundary conditions was considered in [\textit{B. A. Aliev} and \textit{Ya. Yakubov}, Integral Equations Oper. Theory 69, No. 2, 269--300 (2011; Zbl 1228.47045)] on an UMD Banach space. As it turns out, the presence of \(\lambda\) in the boundary conditions highly affects the solvability of the problem as well as the assumptions and regularity properties. The authors use techniques developed in [\textit{S. Yakubov} and \textit{Y. Yakubov}, Differential-operator equations: ordinary and partial differential equations. Boca Raton, FL: Chapman \& Hall/CRC (2000; Zbl 0936.35002)] and [\textit{A. Favini} and \textit{Y. Yakubov}, Math. Ann. 348, No. 3, 601--632 (2010; Zbl 1214.34046)] to study the solvability of the problem and the Fredholm property for each fixed \(\lambda\). They obtain noncoercive estimates for the solutions. In the last section they present an application of their results to a boundary value problem for a second-order elliptic partial differential operator equation defined in a square.
