Poisson wavelets, which have explicit representations and are well-localized, are introduced for performing directional wavelet analysis on the \(n\)-dimensional sphere. After presenting some basic notation for representing functions on the \(n\)-dimensional sphere in the \((n+1)\)-dimensional Euclidean space, Gegenbauer polynomials and hyperspherical harmonics are recalled. Directional Poisson wavelets defined as directional derivatives of the Poisson kernel are introduced. A recursive formula of the Fourier coefficients of the wavelets is derived which allows computing their series representation. Moreover it is shown that certain linear combinations of Poisson wavelets satisfy an approximate identity. Finally, the Euclidean limit of the directional wavelets is computed deriving thus an explicit formula. The appendix describes explicit representations of the wavelets for the example of the second directional derivative of the Poisson kernel.
