This very clearly written paper contains a wealth of results on symmetric spaces of measurable operators affiliated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra \(M\) with a faithful normal semifinite trace \(\tau\). The main one states that if \(E\) is a symmetric Banach function space on \({\mathbb{R}}^+\) with the Fatou property, then the absolute value mapping on \(E(M, \tau)\) is Lipschitz continuous with Lipschitz constant depending only on \(E\) if and only if \(E\) has non-trivial Boyd indices, i.e., if and only if \(E\) is an interpolation space for a pair \((L^p, L^q)\) with \(1<p<q<\infty\). Since Haagerup \(L^p\)-spaces are closed subspaces of noncommutative Lorentz spaces on the crossed product algebra with the canonical trace and classical Lorentz spaces have non-trivial Boyd indices for \(1<p<\infty\), the absolute value map on Haagerup's \(L^p\)-spaces with \(1<p<\infty\) is Lipschitz continuous. The Lipschitz estimates for symmetric operator spaces turn out to be equivalent to certain commutator estimates. The main analytical tool is Arveson's theory of spectral subspaces and the UMD property. In particular, each of the spaces \(L^p(M, \tau)\) has the property. The authors generalize Macaev's theorem from the Schatten ideals to separable symmetric operator spaces. The paper ends with a result on shell decompositions of symmetric operator spaces.
