This paper has the character of a survey, but it also contains new results. The author deals with abstract Volterra integral equations of scalar type in sequentially complete locally convex spaces. The main purpose is to present a detailed analysis of the notion of \((a,k)\)-regularized \(C\)-resolvent family introduced in [\textit{M. Kostić}, Abstr. Appl. Anal. 2009, Article ID 858242 (2009; Zbl 1200.47059)]. Among others, such issues as analysis of spectral properties of subgenerators of \((a,k)\)-regularized \(C\)-resolvent families, Hille-Yosida type theorems as well as smoothing and duality properties are raised.
