Let \(X\) be a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary \(Y\) such that the Riemannian metric of \(X\) is a product metric near \(Y\). Let \(A\) be an operator of Dirac type on \(X\). Near \(Y\), \(A\) is supposed to be of the form \(A = G(\partial_ n + B)\) where \(G\) is a bundle isomorphism, \(\partial_ u\) is differentiation in normal direction, and \(B\) is the corresponding Dirac operator on \(Y\). We obtain a complete Riemannian manifold \(X_ \infty\) by attaching a cylindrical end to \(X\), \(X_ \infty = X\underset {Y}\cup (-\infty,0]\times Y\). \(A\) can be extended to \(X_ \infty\) in an obvious fashion. The \(\eta\)-function of this extension may be defined by \[ \eta_ A(s) = \Gamma\left({s+1\over 2}\right)\int^ \infty_ 0 t^{(s-1)/2}\text{Tr}(Ae^{-tA^ 2})dt. \] The main result of the paper says that \(\eta_ A(s)\) defines a holomorphic function for \(\text{Re}(s) >-2\) and that there is a meromorphic extension to the whole complex plane with simple poles at the points \(-2,-4,\dots\). The residue of \(\eta_ A(s)\) at these points can be calculated in terms of the total symbol of \(A\).
