Let \({\mathbf M}^{\alpha}(d,\chi)\) be the moduli space of \(\alpha\)-stable pairs with Hilbert polynomial \(dm+\chi\) on the projective plane \(\mathbb P^2\) in the sense of \textit{J. Le Potier} [Rev. Roum. Math. Pures Appl. 38, No. 7--8, 635--678 (1993; Zbl 0815.14029); Systèmes cohérents et structures de niveau. Paris: Société Mathématique de France (1993; Zbl 0881.14008)]. As \(\alpha\) varies, the objects parameterized by \({\mathbf M}^{\alpha}(d, \chi)\) have different geometric meanings. In particular for \(\alpha = 0\), it is the Simpson moduli space \({\mathbf M}(d,\chi)\) of semistable sheaves on \(\mathbb P^2\) with Hilbert polynomial \(dm+\chi\); for \(\alpha\) large enough, it is the moduli space \({\mathbf M}^{\infty}(d,\chi)\) of relative Hilbert scheme of points on the universal degree \(d\) plane curve. For \(\chi=1\) and \(d=4\) or \(5\), the main result of this paper gives an explicit wall-crossing description of the variation from \({\mathbf M}^{\infty}(d,1)\) to \({\mathbf M}(d, 1)\) as one alters \(\alpha\), where each wall-crossing is a composition of a smooth blow-up followed by a blow-down. As a corollary, the authors also obtain the Poincaré polynomials of \({\mathbf M}(d,1)\) in these cases. In order to prove the result, the authors study the flipping locus at each wall by using stability conditions and describe the blow-up center as certain configuration of points on curves. They then perform the elementary modifications of pairs to construct the blow-down morphism.
