The authors try to find a spatial cubic curve \(\gamma(t) = (x(t), y(t), z(t))\) having the property that \(x'(t) + y'(t) + z'(t) = \sigma(t)^2\) with some polynomial \(\sigma\) and satisfying two Hermite interpolation conditions, \(\gamma(j) = P_j\), \(\gamma'(j) = t_j\), \(j = 0,1\), with some given points \(P_j\) and tangent vectors \(t_j\). The main results of the paper are necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to this problem. Moreover, in the case where more than one solution exists, a scheme is described that allows to select a solution that is particularly good in a certain sense. This selection is based on the requirement that the interpolant should depend on the interpolation data \(P_j\) and \(t_j\) in a continuous way.
