Mainly from the introductory section of the paper: The author introduces a new set of moduli of smoothness on the unit ball in \(R^d\) which are \` correct\' \ in the sense that they satisfy direct and weak converse inequalities. Some further advantages are the following: they are independent of the basis of the underlying Euclidean space \(R^d\); they apply to a larger variety of Banach spaces of functions on the unit ball in \(R^d\) and not just to weighted \(L_p\); they are naturally defined for a continuous parameter and are, therefore, more versatile; they allow us to obtain, for a big subclass of spaces, results like sharp Jackson, Nikolski, and Ul'yanov inequalities. It is important to mention that these last results are given in a different paper, where it is also shown how in many cases the new moduli are computable. The afore referred paper is [the author, J. Approx. Theory 180, 49--76 (2014; Zbl 1293.41006)]. It seems that the author was obliged to split his new and outstanding investigations on moduli of smoothness into two papers. The new measures of smoothness utilize uniformly bounded holomorphic semigroups on the Banach space in question. The method used also applies to spaces of functions on the simplex and the unit sphere, and while the main goal is the investigation of properties and relations concerning the unit ball, many of the results are given for other domains and situations. The classic properties, including equivalence with appropriate \(K\)-functionals or realization functionals, are established. Bernstein- and Kolmogorov-type inequalities are proved.
