The article under review studies a particular case of the Bloch-Beilinson conjecture, which predicts the existence of a filtration on the Chow gorups (all Chow groups mentioned in the article, and thus in the review, are with rational coefficients) of smooth projective varieties, which are ``controlled'' by the Hodge structure. The reader could refer to Conjecture 1.4 for the precise statement. The whole conjecture seems to be out of reach at the moment. But the author studies some particular cases in this article. The main theorem is the following: Theorem 1.6: Let \(f\) be an automorphism of a smooth cubic fourfold \(X\) acting as identity on \(H^{3,1}(X)\). Then \(f\) acts as the identity on \(\mathrm{CH}_1(X)_\mathbb{Q}\). From this result, one can deduce the following: Theorem 1.5: Let \(f\) be an automorphism of a smooth cubic fourfold \(X\). If the induced action on its Fano variety of lines \(F(X)\), denoted by \(\hat{f}\) , preserves the symplectic form, then \(\hat{f}\) acts on \(\mathrm{CH}_0(F(X))\) as identity. Equivalently, the polarized symplectic automorphisms of F(X) act as identity on \(\mathrm{CH}_0(F(X))\). Here is the rough idea of the proof of Theorem 1.6. Denote \(\Delta_{\mathrm{inv}}=\frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=0}^{n}\Gamma_{f^i}\), where \(n\) is the order of \(f\) and \(\Gamma_{f^i}\) is the cycle of the graph of \(f^i\) in \(X \times X\). Then it suffices to show that \(\Delta-\Delta_{\mathrm{inv}}\) is supported in codimension \(2\) modulo some cycles whose action on \(\mathrm{CH}_1(X)\) is well-understood, and thus acts trivially on \(\mathrm{CH}_1(X)\). To do this, the author explores two features of the problem. One, there is a universal family of cubic fourfolds with the action, and the total family has a compactification whose Chow groups are easy to understand. So one can extend the cycles \(\Delta\) and \(\Delta_{\mathrm{inv}}\) to the whole family and try to prove the cycles relations there, which is easier since the Chow group of the total family is so simple. Two, the Chow motive of a cubic fourfold is basically that of a surface. This is used to extend some homologically trivial cycles in the universal family to homologically trivial cycles in the compactification of the total family.
