Modulated crystals and almost periodic measures (Q2224516): Difference between revisions

A class of point sets in the Euclidean space known as modulated quasicrystals was introduced by \textit{N. G. de Bruijn} [Indag. Math. 49, 121--132 (1987; Zbl 0646.05018)]. They can be used to characterise both quasicrystals and modulated crystals. Model sets were introduced by \textit{Y. Meyer} [Algebraic numbers and harmonic analysis. Elsevier (North-Holland), Amsterdam (1972; Zbl 0267.43001)] and are related to a certain class of mathematical quasicrystals. The mathematical diffraction of an example of a modulated crystal consisting of sine modulated integers is discussed in this work by using model sets in general locally compact abelian groups, which generalise the Euclidean space. The considered cases of modulation and deformation of lattices, which are deformed weighted model sets, are an extension of the sine modulated integers example. Besides point sets, the authors use measures and describe those which are strongly almost periodic. Dirac combs of model sets are not strongly almost periodic in general. It is proved that deformed weighted model sets with continuous and compactly supported weight and deformation functions are strongly almost periodic. It is also shown that the class of deformed weighted model sets coincides in the Euclidean space with the class of modulated weighted model sets. Modulations of ideal crystals, which are model sets having discrete internal space, are studied in the final section.
