The authors show that an \(n\)-by-\(n\) matrix \(A\) and every proper principal submatrix of \(A\) has a strictly dominant positive eigenvalue with associated positive left and right eigenvectors if and only if \(A\) is entry-wise positive. They also note that this limits the extent to which attractive Perron-Frobenius properties may be generalized outside the positive matrices.
