Let \(A\) be a finite dimensional indecomposable \(k\)-algebra over an algebraically closed field \(k\). Recall that the representation theory of \(A\) can be classified as either finite, tame, or wild type based on the number of non-isomorphic indecomposable \(A\)-modules. The definition of tame requires in part that for a given dimension \(d\), there exists a finite set of \(A\)-\(k[X]\)-bimodules \(M_i\) for \(i\in\{1,\dots,n_d\}\) such that the \(M_i\) ``determine'' all but a finite number of the indecomposable \(A\)-modules of dimension \(d\). If there exists an integer \(m\) such that \(\lim_{d\to\infty}\frac{n_d}{d^m}=0\), then \(A\) is said to have \textit{polynomial growth}. If there is an integer \(m\) such that \(n_d\leq m\) for all \(d\) (i.e. \(n_d\) may be chosen independent of \(d\)), the algebra is said to be of \textit{domestic} type. This paper is interested in the classification of indecomposable symmetric or weakly symmetric tame algebras having polynomial growth and the Auslander-Reiten conjecture that asserts that if \(A\) and \(B\) are stably equivalent finite dimensional \(k\)-algebras over a field \(k\), then \(A\) and \(B\) should have the same number of isomorphism classes of non-projective simple modules. Recall that a weakly symmetric algebra is one for which the socle of any indecomposable projective module is isomorphic to its head. The work makes extensive use of known classification results for (weakly) symmetric tame algebras. In what follows, all algebras are assumed to be indecomposable. The cases of domestic vs. non-domestic type are considered separately. In the domestic case, it is shown that two symmetric algebras of domestic type are derived equivalent if and only if they are stably equivalent if and only if they are stably equivalent of Morita type. It is further shown that the class of symmetric algebras of domestic type is closed under stable equivalences, stable equivalences of Morita type, or derived equivalences. Since the number of simple modules is preserved under derived equivalences, it follows that the Auslander-Reiten conjecture holds for symmetric algebras of domestic type. The claim that derived equivalence is equivalent to stable equivalence can be extended to weakly symmetric algebras of domestic type. However, the claim on closure is only proved for weakly symmetric algebras of domestic type that are \textit{standard} (meaning its basic algebra admits simply connected Galois coverings). For the non-domestic type case, the main result is that the classification of non-domestic type weakly symmetric algebras of polynomial growth up to stable equivalences of Morita type coincides with the (known) derived equivalence classification of such algebras up to certain ``scalar problems''. Even with these scalar problems, the Auslander-Reiten conjecture still holds for two such algebras that are stably equivalent of Morita type. It is also shown that the Auslander-Reiten conjecture holds for two non-standard self-injective algebras of polynomial growth or two tame symmetric algebras with periodic modules that are stably equivalent of Morita type.
