Let \(\Omega\) be a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in \({\mathbb C}^n\) on which the \(\overline{\partial}\)-Neumann operator is compact. The Bergman space \(A^2(\Omega)\) is the closed subspace of \(L^2(\Omega)\) (with Lebesgue plane measure) consisting of holomorphic functions on \(\Omega\), \(P\) is the Bergman projection of \(L^2(\Omega)\) onto \(A^2(\Omega)\), and for \(\phi\in L^\infty (\Omega)\) the Toeplitz operator \(T_\phi\) is defined on \(A^2(\omega)\) by \(T_\phi f= P(\phi f)\). Let, moreover, \({\mathcal T}(\overline{\Omega})\) stand for the norm closed algebra generated by all Toeplitz operators \(T_\phi\) with symbols \(\phi\) continuous on \(\overline{\Omega}\) and \(\widetilde{S}\) denote the Berezin transform of the operator \(S\). The main result of the paper is as follows: an operator \(T\in{\mathcal T}(\overline{\Omega})\), satisfying \(\lim_{z\to p}\widetilde{T}(z)=0\) for all \(p\) from the boundary of \(\Omega\), is compact. This is a generalization of the theorem of \textit{S. Axler} and \textit{D.-C. Zheng} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 47, No. 2, 387--400 (1998; Zbl 0914.47029)] from the case when \(T\) is a finite sum of finite products of Toeplitz operators and \(\Omega\) is the unit disk \(\mathbb D\). A brief description of earlier generalizations of this result is also given in the introduction.
