The BEL-construction is a geometric method for constructing semifield spreads using what is called a BEL-configuration inside a vector space of dimension \(rn\) over the finite field with \(q\) elements. The authors investigate this construction in detail and generalize results form previous papers. In particular, the restriction \(r=n\) is released. The multiplication is determined explicitly. Polarities and duality are explored. In the case \(r=n\) precise conditions for isotopy are presented; whereas, in the case \(r<n\) a single BEL-configuration can be used to produce non-isotopic semifields.
