The present paper is devoted to the construction of stable and unstable quasi-periodic solutions for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a \(d\)-dimensional torus. The results are obtained by exploiting the Hamiltonian structure and applying a KAM algorithm. The existence of large families of stable and unstable quasi-periodic solutions for the NLS equation is proved in any number of independent frequencies. The main tools are the existence of a nondegenerate integrable normal form and a generalization of the quasi-Toeplitz functions earlier defined and proved by the authors in [Commun. Math. Phys. 312, No. 2, 501--557 (2012; Zbl 1277.35318)]. Starting with the NLS with a zero equilibrium being an elliptic fixed point, one can try to find solutions of the nonlinear equation that stay close to the solutions of the linear problem for all times. However, two classes of problems occur in such problems. First, resonances may lead to no quasi-periodic solutions in the linear equations. Second, small divisors may result in the unbounded inverse linearized operator. To deal with these problems, one can use a combination of the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction techniques with the Nash-Moser algorithm. Alternatively, one can try a combination of the Birkhoff normal form with the KAM algorithm. Both algorithms are quadratic iteration schemes, generalizing the Newton steepest descent method. The authors adopt these algorithms and develop their earlier approaches to construct quasi-periodic solutions in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a torus.
