The paper deals with the Fornberg-Whitham equation, which arises in the study of breaking waves. This is a non-linear equation for the wave height, which is described as a function of one spatial variable and time. Local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the Fornberg-Whitham equation in Besov spaces \(B^s_{p,r}\) is proved in the case when \(1\leq p,r \leq +\infty \), \(s>1+\frac{1}{p}\) and in the case when \(1\leq p <+\infty\), \(r=1\), \(s=1+\frac{1}{p}\). The solution is constracted as a limit of approximate solutions obtained by iteration scheme. The author demonstrates that the continuous dependence is non-uniform with the help of constructing the suitable sequence of initial data. The case of Besov spaces in which the Cauchy problem for the Fornberg-Whitham equation is ill-posed is also considered.
