Let \(1<p<\infty\) and \(a,b\) be piecewise continuous functions on the unit circle \({\mathbb T}\) such that \(a(t)a(a^{-1})=b(t)b(t^{-1})\) for \(t\in{\mathbb T}\). A Fredholm criterion for the Toeplitz-plus-Hankel operator \(T(a)+H(b)\) on the Hardy space \(H^p({\mathbb T})\) is obtained. The dimensions of its kernel and cokernel are computed. As a consequence, an invertibility criterion for \(T(a)+H(b)\) is obtained. Several important examples are considered.
