Let \((M,g)\) be a closed connected oriented Riemann surface. Fix a spin structure on \(M\) and let \(D\) be the Dirac operator; this is an elliptic first-order self-adjoint partial differential operator. A spinor \(\psi\) is said to be an eigenspinor if \(D\psi=\lambda\psi\). Let \(\chi(M)\) be the Euler characteristic and \(N(\psi)\) the sum of the orders of the zeros of \(\psi\). The author shows Theorem. Let \((M,g)\) be a closed connected spin surface. Let \(\psi\) be an eigenspinor. Then \[ \lambda(\psi)^2\geq\frac{2\pi\chi(M)}{\text{vol}(M,g)}+\frac{4\pi N(\psi)}{\text{vol}(M,g)}\,. \]
