Abstract: We use a modified Bochner technique to derive an inequality relating the nodal set of eigenspinors to eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on closed surfaces. In addition, we apply this technique to solutions of similar spinorial equations.

Let \((M,g)\) be a closed connected oriented Riemann surface. Fix a spin structure on \(M\) and let \(D\) be the Dirac operator; this is an elliptic first-order self-adjoint partial differential operator. A spinor \(\psi\) is said to be an eigenspinor if \(D\psi=\lambda\psi\). Let \(\chi(M)\) be the Euler characteristic and \(N(\psi)\) the sum of the orders of the zeros of \(\psi\). The author shows Theorem. Let \((M,g)\) be a closed connected spin surface. Let \(\psi\) be an eigenspinor. Then \[ \lambda(\psi)^2\geq\frac{2\pi\chi(M)}{\text{vol}(M,g)}+\frac{4\pi N(\psi)}{\text{vol}(M,g)}\,. \]
