The author has made some differential-geometric observations on the kinematics of convex surfaces along a fixed plane in \(\mathbb{R}^ 3\) and relates them to parallel transport and Gauss-Bonnet formula. Three applications of these considerations are presented: The first one is the Berry's phase which appears in the free rigid body motion. The second one is a problem of rolling a ball on the plane proposed by R. Brockett and the third one concerns the motion of a rigid body with a rotor.
