The authors formulate the basic equations that govern the dissipation induced by the progress of a phase boundary in hyperelastic solids. The total dissipation is defined here as the negative of the change in total potential energy. An expression for the normal driving traction is obtained in terms of the jump of the Gibbs energy. A discussion is given for the case where the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress depends linearly on the deformation gradient. Such a case yields no dissipation at the phase front. The authors, contrary to others (e.g., [\textit{G. A. Maugin} and \textit{C. Trimarco}, Arch. Mech., 47, No. 1, 81-89 (1995; Zbl 0822.73005); Meccanica, 30, 605-619 (1995)] do not recognize the relationship of obtaining the expression for the driving force with so-called Eshelbian mechanics, and they do not account for thermal effects which are nonetheless essential in the present context, so that their dissipation argument is not related to a true statement of the second law of thermodynamics. They do not explain why the growth is purely normal (continuity of the material velocity \(V\)), and they ignore the related works of \textit{L. M. Truskinowsky}, \textit{M. Grinfeld}, and \textit{M. E. Gurtin} and co-workers.
