The paper deals with multiplicative unitaries \(V\in L(H\otimes H)\), where \(H\) is a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, and investigates the question what are the invariant subspaces \(M\) of \(H\) for which \(V(M\otimes M)= M\otimes M\). The authors study certain unitary vectors \(f\in H\) with \(V(f\otimes f)= f\otimes f\), called ``pre-subgroups' of \(V\) and give a number of results for them. Their approach provides a new viewpoint on coideal subalgebras of Hopf algebras and on the theory of intermediate subfactors.
