A \(q\)-analogue of the Legendre inversion is established and generalized to bilateral sequences. They are employed to investigate the dual relations of three basic formulae due to Jackson and Bailey, on balanced \(_{3}\phi_{2}\)-series, well-poised \(_{8}\phi_{7}\)-series and bilateral \(_{6}\psi_{6}\)-series. Several terminating well-poised series identities are consequently derived, including the \(q\)-Dixon formulae on terminating \(_{3}\psi_{3}\)-series and two terminating well-poised \(_{5}\psi_{5}\)-series identities due to \textit{F. H. Jackson} [Q. J. Math., Oxf. Ser. 12, 167--172 (1941; Zbl 0063.03007)] and \textit{W. N. Bailey} [Q. J. Math., Oxf. II. Ser. 1, 318--320 (1950; Zbl 0038.22801)].
