The following notion is studied: Let \(A\subset L(X)\) be a convex set of operators on a Banach space~\(X\) containing the zero operator. Then \(X\) is said to have the \(A\)-approximation property if there is a net of operators \(T_i\in A\) converging to the identity operator uniformly on compact subsets of~\(X\). (The classical approximation property corresponds to the choice \(A=\) the set of all finite-rank operators.) The authors investigate the \(A\)-approximation property and its metric version and show, for example, that \(X^*\) has the metric ``\(A^*\)''-approximation property with conjugate operators \(T_i^*\), \(T_i\in A\), provided that \(X\) has the metric \(A\)-approximation property in every equivalent norm. There are further results on the weak metric \(A\)-approximation property (defined in the spirit of [\textit{Å.~Lima} and \textit{E.~Oja}, Math.\ Ann.\ 333, No.~3, 471--484 (2005; Zbl 1097.47012)]), the positive approximation property for Banach lattices and the recent notion of the approximation property for pairs of Banach spaces, recently introduced by \textit{T.~Figiel, W. B.~Johnson} and \textit{A.~Pełczyński} [Isr.\ J. Math.\ 183, No.~1, 199--231 (2011; Zbl 1235.46027)], which can be considered in this framework as well.
