Let \((V,c)\) be a braided vector space. The author introduces a braided Lie algebra associated to \((V,c)\) and its universal enveloping algebra, whose space of primitive elements identifies with \(V\). It is explained how a braided algebra \(A\) becomes a braided Lie algebra in a canonical way. If \(A\) is a braided bialgebra, this braided Lie algebra structure on \(A\) restricts to the space \(P\) of primitive elements in \(A\), thus obtaining the infinitesimal braided Lie algebra of \(A\). It is proved that the braided Lie algebra associated to a braided vector space identifies with the infinitesimal braided Lie algebra of the associated universal enveloping algebra. The main result of the paper is a Milnor-Moore type theorem, saying that a braided bialgebra generated as an algebra by its space of primitive elements is isomorphic as a braided bialgebra to the universal enveloping algebra of its infinitesimal braided Lie algebra.
