The author considers braided Hopf algebras by following the point of view of \textit{M. Takeuchi} [Contemp. Math. 267, 301-323 (2000; Zbl 0978.16035)], where braided bialgebras are algebras and coalgebras with a Yang-Baxter operator \(\tau\), satisfying certain compatibility conditions. For \(\tau^2=\text{Id}\), generalized Lie algebras (or Lie \(\tau\)-algebras) in the sense of \textit{D. I. Gurevich} [Sov. J. Contemp. Math. Anal., Arm. Acad. Sci. 18, No. 4, 57-70 (1984); translation from Izv. Akad. Nauk Arm. SSR, Mat. 18, No. 4, 305-317 (1983; Zbl 0546.22010)] are considered. If \(\tau^2=\text{Id}\), it is proved that the category of connected \(\tau\)-cocommutative braided Hopf algebras \(H\) over a field of characteristic zero is equivalent to the category of generalized Lie algebras \(L\) via the universal enveloping construction \(L\mapsto U(L)\) of \textit{D. Fischman} and \textit{S. Montgomery} [J. Algebra 168, No. 2, 594-614 (1994; Zbl 0818.16031)]. Parts of the proof show the following: (1) A generalized Lie algebra embeds in its universal enveloping algebra; (2) An isomorphism \(H\simeq U(\text{Prim\,}H)\) as braided Hopf algebras; (3) Primitive generation results, where \(H\) and \(L\) are as above. The primitive generation problem for subalgebras, biideals and homomorphic images of connected braided Hopf algebras is discussed in the more general context where \(\tau\) is not necessarily an involution, and even not necessarily invertible.
