Dealing with functional differential systems with oscillatory decreasing coefficients, the author investigates the asymptotic behavior of the solutions. The approach used to treat the problem combines averaging methods and asymptotic integration theory. In summary, at first, a problem in the extended phase space is defined; an averaging method is applied to reduce the extended system, in some sense, to a perturbed system of ODEs with diagonal matrices; and finally, the asymptotic representation for its solution is derived. For these purposes, an extension of results of the averaging theory concerning the asymptotic integration to the case of functional differential system is presented. The main results are applied to the study of a second order delay equation -- an adiabatic oscillator type equation.
