The authors introduce two ways of extending the concept of an operator ideal to a pair of an ideal of \(n\)-homogeneous polynomials and an ideal of \(n\)-linear mappings: Compatible pairs of ideals and coherent pairs of ideals. This approach differs from previous extensions in that the ideals of homogeneous polynomials and multilinear mappings are interlinked. It is shown that the ideals of nuclear polynomials and \(n\)-linear mappings, the ideals of integral polynomials and \(n\)-linear mappings, the ideals obtained through the factorisation method, the ideals of everywhere absolutely summing polynomials and \(n\)-linear mappings, and the ideals of strongly summing polynomials and \(n\)-linear mappings all give pairs of ideals which are both compatible and coherent.
