Mirror extensions in the title of the paper refer to the general abstract statement which produces completely rational conformal nets from given ones. The close connection between conformal nets and vertex operator algebras, in the present paper the authors formulate a ``Mirror extension conjecture'' for vertex operator algebras which, in a similar fashion, predicts existence of certain rational vertex operator algebras. The paper studies this conjecture and mainly concentrates on two explicit examples of extensions of affine vertex operator algebras of type \(A\). The first example is based on conformal inclusions \(\mathrm{SU}(2)_{10}\subset\mathrm{Spin}(5)_1\) and \(\mathrm{SU}(2)_{10}\times\mathrm{SU}(10)_2 \subset\mathrm{SU}(20)_1\). The second example is based on the conformal inclusion \(\mathrm{SU}(2)_{28}\subset (G_2)_1\) and the level-rank duality \(\mathrm{SU}(2)_{28}\times \mathrm{SU}(28)_2\subset\mathrm{SU}(56)_1\).
