For hemicompact spaces \(X\) it is known that the hyperspace \(K(X)\) of all non-empty compact subsets of \(X,\) endowed with the Vietoris topology, is hemicompact too. In this paper the related notion of a strongly dominated space \(X\) is studied with respect to its hyperspace \(K(X)\). A space \(X\) is called strongly dominated by a space \(M\) if there exists a family \(\mathcal{F} = \{F_K : K\subseteq M, \text{compact} \},\) such that \(\mathcal{F}\) covers \(X\) , \(K \subseteq L \Rightarrow F_K \subseteq F_L\) for any \(K\) and \(L\) compact subsets of \(M\) and for any \(A,\) compact subset of \(X,\) there exists \(F \in \mathcal{F}\) such that \(A \subseteq F\). It is shown that a space \(X\) is \(\kappa\)-hemicompact if and only if \(X\) is strongly dominated by the discrete space on the cardinal \(\kappa\). Moreover a space \(X\) is shown to be strongly dominated by \(M\) if and only if \(K(X)\) is strongly dominated by \(M\). Among the positive results, the authors show that for a discrete space \(X\), the hyperspace \(K(X^*)\) of its one point compactification \(X^*\) is semi-Eberlein compact.
