The density property has been introduced by \textit{D. Varolin} [J. Geom. Anal. 11, No. 1, 135--160 (2001; Zbl 0994.32019)] to describe precisely when an automorphism group of a complex manifolds is ``large''. The Andersen-Lempert Theorem [loc. cit.; \textit{F. Forstnerič} and \textit{J.-P. Rosay}, Invent. Math. 112, No. 2, 323--349 (1993; Zbl 0792.32011); \textit{E. Andersén}, Complex Variables, Theory Appl. 14, No. 1--4, 223--235 (1990; Zbl 0705.58008); \textit{E. Andersén} and \textit{L. Lempert}, Invent. Math. 110, No. 2, 371--388 (1992; Zbl 0770.32015)] which is essentially a Runge-type approximation theorem for holomorphic automorphisms, can then be generalized from the complex-Euclidean space to Stein manifolds with the density property. A complex manifold enjoys the density property if the Lie algebra generated by its complete holomorphic vector fields is dense in the Lie algebra of all of its holomorphic vector fields. An affine manifold enjoys the algebraic density property if the Lie algebra of its complete algebraic vector fields coincides with the Lie algebra of all of its algebraic vector fields. Obviously, the algebraic density property for affine manifolds implies the density property. In this paper, the authors generalize the notion of the algebraic density property to affine varieties, allowing for singularities. They allow the vector fields to vanish on a subvariety which contains the singular locus, and define an algebraic density property relative to this subvariety. Their main result is that an affine toric variety \(X\) satisfies this algebraic density property relative to a closed \(T\)-invariant subvariety \(Y\) if and only if \(X \setminus Y = T\). Moreover, they are able to classify those toric surfaces which possess a strong version of the algebraic density property relative to their singular locus.
