The paper under review establishes a representation for the scattering matrix of two self-adjoint operators in a Hilbert space by means of the abstract Weyl function. More precisely, let \(\mathfrak{H}\) be a Hilbert space and \(A,B\) be self-adjoint operators in \(\mathfrak{H}\) such that their resolvent difference is trace class. Then the wave operators \(W_{\pm}(A,B)\) exist and are complete. Let \(S(A,B):=W_+(A,B)^*W_-(A,B)\) be the scattering system, and \((S(A,B,\lambda))_{\lambda\in\mathbb{R}}\) be the scattering matrix, i.e. the family of unitary multiplication operators representing \(S(A,B)\) in the absolutely continuous part of \(A\). Then \[ S(A,B,\lambda) = I - 2i \sqrt{\mathrm{Im } M(\lambda+i0)} M(\lambda+i0)^{-1} \sqrt{\mathrm{Im } M(\lambda+i0)} \] for a.e.\ \(\lambda\in\mathbb{R}\), where \(M\) is the Weyl function, see Theorem 3.1. This result is then applied to Schrödinger operators with Dirichlet, Neumman, and Robin boundary conditions on exterior domains in \(\mathbb{R}^2\) and \(\mathbb{R}^3\) with \(C^\infty\)-boundary, and to Schrödinger operators with singular potentials supported on curves and hypersurfaces in \(\mathbb{R}^2\) and \(\mathbb{R}^3\). The main tool is a formulation of the problem by means of generalized boundary triplets.
