In [\textit{X. Chen} et al., J. Am. Math. Soc. 28, No. 1, 183--197 (2015; Zbl 1312.53096)] the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics for compact Fano manifolds \((X,\omega)\) is proved to be equivalent to an algebro-geometric criterion called K-stability. In this paper the author deals with the case when the metric \(\omega\) has some prescribed singularities. More precisely, given an \(\omega\)-plurisubharmonic function \(u\), \[ \omega_u:= \omega+\mathrm{d}\mathrm{d}^c u \] is said to be a Kähler-Einstein metric with prescribed singularities \([\Psi]\) if it has a well-defined Ricci curvature equaling \(\omega_u\), where \(u\) is more singular than \(\Psi\) such that the \(\Psi\)-relative energy is finite, see Section 2 for the precise definition of \(\Psi\)-relative energy. In this setting, a generalization of Tian's \(\alpha\)-invariant is given, in particular the upper lever set \(\alpha_{\omega}(\cdot)>n/(n+1)\) produces a subset of the locus given by all prescribed singularities that admit Kähler-Einstein metrics. As a corollary, the author proves that many K-stable manifolds admit all possible Kähler-Einstein metrics with prescribed singularities and other similar results are proved in Theorem A. Eventually, in Theorem B, through a continuity method, the strong continuity of Kähler-Einstein metrics on curves of totally ordered prescribed singularities is proved when the relative automorphism groups are discrete. To prove these results, the author develops a variational approach, in particular the well-known Ding and Mabuchi functionals are generalized in this framework.
